7 Best Plotline Alternatives for In-App Gamification (2026)

Plotline now describes itself as an "AI-native omnichannel marketing platform", and gamification is one module inside it. If you searched for Plotline alternatives, you are probably in one of two camps. Either you want a broad engagement platform and are comparing suites, or you want gamification that holds up over months and a suite is more than you need. This post covers both, and it argues for the second: a tool built only for gamification can go deeper on that job than a platform that has to cover push, email, journeys and in-app messaging as well.

Quick answer

Plotline suits growth teams that want no-code onboarding UI, stories and promotional games in one tool and have an Enterprise budget. Teams look elsewhere when they want gamification without an Enterprise contract, a lower price floor, or streaks, points and leaderboards that persist beyond a campaign.

Pick Best for
Trophy Persistent streaks, achievements, points and leaderboards through an API
Mambo A gamification-only platform with points, badges and levels, in the cloud or self-hosted
CleverTap A full engagement suite that includes gamified in-app templates

Why trust this comparison

Trophy powers gamification for over 2M end users. Michael Tong, CTO at RevisionDojo, says on his customer page: "Trophy has been a game-changer for us. We added gamification to our platform in a week and it's helped us retain students. We have seen a 9% increase in student retention since we started using Trophy."

Our Gamification Intelligence Report 2026 draws on over 250M user interactions from over 1.5M users in the 12 months ending August 2026, so we see how streaks, points and leaderboards behave at scale.

We built Trophy, so we are listed first and we say so. Every competitor fact below comes from the vendor's own pages, read on 29 and 30 October 2026. Trophy's security status comes from trust.trophy.so, read the same day.

What is Plotline?

Plotline is an in-app engagement platform for consumer apps. Its homepage (29 Oct 2026) calls it an "AI-native omnichannel marketing platform" and says it is trusted by 150+ consumer apps. Products include widgets, nudges, gamification, videos, push and email. SDKs cover Android, iOS, React Native, Flutter, Unity and web. Plotline's pricing page quotes setup of 1 to 2 days for native apps and about 30 minutes for web.

Its gamification page lists scratch cards, spin the wheel, quizzes, streaks and milestones, slot machines, treasure chests and mystery boxes, with a reward engine that supports probability weights, per-user limits and coupon codes. G2 shows 4.6 from 41 reviews (read 29 Oct 2026).

Why teams look for Plotline alternatives

Gamification sits on the Enterprise plan

Plotline's pricing page (29 Oct 2026) lists streaks, quizzes, skill-based games and rewards under Enterprise only, which is custom-priced and billed annually. Its FAQ says gamification can be added to lower plans as a custom module.

The price floor and usage billing

Starter begins at $999 a month and Growth at $2,499. Pricing combines a monthly-active-user fee with impressions, and the page says campaigns stop for the rest of the month if the impression cap is reached. The first three months include unlimited impressions. There is no free trial, only a paid pilot.

Where the product is heading

Plotline moved to an AI-native omnichannel position in September 2026, with an AI Director and an MCP server. If you only want in-app gamification, you are buying into a roadmap aimed at the whole customer engagement stack.

Promotional games versus persistent state

Plotline's gamification page lists game formats that suit campaigns. It doesn't list leaderboards or a points ledger. Those two features need state that lives for months per user: a streak has to survive time zones and a missed day, and a leaderboard has to reset on schedule and pick winners fairly. That is the work an engagement platform has the least reason to specialise in.

Security evidence

Plotline's homepage displays GDPR, ISO 27001, SOC 1 and SOC 2 badges, and its FAQ says it is SOC 2 Type II certified. Its pricing page says security certificates are available on request. Ask for the report. On this point Plotline is ahead of Trophy today.

Prices and plans change, so check each vendor before you decide. G2 figures are rating and review count. CleverTap, MoEngage, Braze and OneSignal come from G2's Plotline alternatives list (29 Oct 2026), and Trophy, Mambo and InAppStory from their own G2 pages (30 Oct 2026). Trophy's and Mambo's scores rest on 7 and 4 reviews, and Trophy's G2 profile is managed by Trophy.

1. Trophy

Best for: consumer apps that want streaks, achievements, points and leaderboards that persist for every user, driven by an API.

Pricing: Pro is $299 a month with 10,000 users included and $0.015 per additional user. Business is $599 a month and adds SSO, MFA and RBAC. Enterprise is custom. Both paid plans include 20,000 emails and 20,000 push notifications. For 50,000 monthly active users on Pro, that is $299 plus 40,000 extra users at $0.015, or $899 a month before notification overages (trophy.so/pricing, 29 Oct 2026). There is a 30-day trial, and a startup programme that offers a free year of Pro for up to 100K MAUs, though acceptance isn't guaranteed.

G2 shows Trophy at 4.8 from 7 reviews (30 Oct 2026), a small sample, and the profile is managed by Trophy.

Trophy is infrastructure for one job. You send metric events from your backend, and Trophy keeps each user's state: streak length, freezes, points, levels and leaderboard rank. Time zones are handled for you. The docs say freezes are consumed at midnight in the user's time zone, and that leaderboards finalise about 12 hours after they end in UTC so users anywhere get a fair chance to win. You configure the rules in a dashboard, or from Cursor and Claude Code through the MCP server, then read the state back into your own UI or use the open-source React UI kit.

Key features: daily, weekly and monthly streaks with freezes and pauses; achievements; points with levels and boosts; repeating and perpetual leaderboards; no-code email and push; webhooks; data sync.

Where Trophy beats Plotline: gamification is on every plan rather than an Enterprise module, the entry price is $299 a month against $999, and pricing is based on users, not impressions, so a busy week never switches your features off. Streaks, points and leaderboards are the core product.

Where Trophy falls short: it doesn't ship spin wheels or scratch cards, and it doesn't build in-app stories or tooltips. Its trust centre shows SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001 as "In progress" (read 29 Oct 2026), so a security review that needs a finished report today may favour Plotline.

Choose Trophy if you want gamification that behaves like part of your product and you are happy to render the UI yourself. Choose Plotline instead if you want campaign-style games and no-code in-app UI.

The Trophy vs Plotline page covers the head-to-head. If you want to see your use case configured, book a call.

2. Mambo

Best for: teams that want a dedicated gamification platform and may need to host it themselves.

Pricing: On-Demand starts from $499 a month, charged monthly by active users, with volume discounts. On-Premise and Dedicated Cloud are "Let's talk" and are paid yearly by CPU (mambo.io/pricing, 30 Oct 2026). The page mentions no free trial.

Mambo's homepage names points, badges and levels and describes a suite of APIs for in-app engagement, deployed as cloud or on-premise. It lists use cases from customer loyalty to employee onboarding and shows an ISO 27001 badge. G2 shows 4.6 from 4 reviews (30 Oct 2026), so treat the score as thin.

Mambo pricing page showing On-Demand from $499 a month, captured 30 Oct 2026

Where Mambo beats Plotline: it sells gamification as the whole product and publishes a starting price, and it offers self-hosting.

Where it falls short: its homepage doesn't mention streaks or leaderboards, no SDK is named, and its entry price is above Trophy's $299 Pro plan.

Choose Mambo if you need on-premise or self-hosted gamification. Choose Trophy instead if you want streaks and leaderboards with time zone handling and a lower entry price.

3. InAppStory

Best for: teams that want stories, banners and promo games.

Pricing: every plan is "price upon request" (29 Oct 2026). Stories and Game Center are priced by MAU, in-app messaging and banners by impressions. Only the Game Center plan lists gamification: 12+ pre-built mini-games, no-code customisation and analytics. Each plan has a one-month trial, and annual billing takes 10% off. G2 shows 5.0 from 65 reviews (30 Oct 2026).

InAppStory pricing page showing price upon request on every plan, captured 29 Oct 2026

Where InAppStory beats Plotline: it separates games into their own plan, so you needn't buy a full messaging suite to get them.

Where it falls short: no security certifications are displayed, and the page doesn't mention streaks or leaderboards.

Choose InAppStory if you want mini-games and stories. Choose Trophy instead if you need persistent progress.

4. CleverTap

Best for: teams that want one suite for messaging, analytics and in-app campaigns.

Pricing: Core is $85 a month for up to 5,000 MAU, with a free trial. Pro and Ultimate are sold through a demo. The FAQ says pricing is based on MAU or data points (clevertap.com/pricing, 30 Oct 2026).

CleverTap's in-app page mentions gamification templates such as spin the wheel and scratch cards. Its footer lists ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA and HIPAA. G2 shows 4.5 from 778 reviews (29 Oct 2026).

CleverTap in-app notifications page, captured 29 Oct 2026
CleverTap pricing page showing Core at $85 a month for up to 5,000 MAU, captured 30 Oct 2026

Where CleverTap beats Plotline: a much larger suite, with a broad security badge row.

Where it falls short: gamification here means campaign templates. Streak and points state is yours to build.

Choose CleverTap if you want a full engagement suite. Choose Trophy instead if the gamification is the product feature.

5. MoEngage

Best for: teams that want a marketing suite with gamified pop-ups.

Pricing: custom. The pricing page compares Growth and Enterprise plans and sends you to sales, with no USD figures (moengage.com/pricing, 30 Oct 2026).

MoEngage's docs list two default in-app gamification pop-ups, spin the wheel and scratch card, configured through HTML templates. Its security page lists GDPR and CCPA sections and doesn't list SOC 2 or ISO 27001. G2 shows 4.5 from 534 reviews (29 Oct 2026).

MoEngage gamification templates documentation, captured 29 Oct 2026

Where MoEngage beats Plotline: it sits inside a marketing suite you may already use.

Where it falls short: templates are edited as HTML, and nothing in the docs page describes persistent streaks or leaderboards.

Choose MoEngage if you want campaign pop-ups inside a suite. Choose Trophy instead if you want state kept per user.

6. Braze

Best for: large teams that orchestrate journeys across channels.

Pricing: custom. Braze sells four Platform Editions (Go, Select, Pro and Enterprise), and a contract covers the edition, monthly active users and profiles, and Action Credits. It has no free plan, though the page offers trials and startup programmes (braze.com/pricing, 30 Oct 2026).

Braze pricing page showing four Platform Editions and a Get pricing button, captured 30 Oct 2026

Braze's article on gamification marketing presents gamification as something brands design across email, in-app, push and web, and a built-in gamification product page did not turn up in my search (29 Oct 2026). G2 shows 4.5 from 1,984 reviews.

Where Braze beats Plotline: enterprise-grade orchestration across channels.

Where it falls short: you build the game mechanics yourself, and G2 reviewers describe it as pricey.

Choose Braze if orchestration is the main need. Choose Trophy instead if you want the game mechanics handled for you.

7. OneSignal

Best for: teams that mostly need push and low-cost messaging.

Pricing: Free is $0 and Growth starts at $19 a month. Professional and Enterprise are custom, on annual contracts. On Growth, mobile push is $0.012 per MAU with in-app messaging included, and email is $1.50 per 1,000 sends after 20,000 free (onesignal.com/pricing, 30 Oct 2026). The free plan includes in-app messaging for up to 1,000 MAU.

OneSignal pricing page showing Free, Growth from $19 a month, Professional and Enterprise custom, captured 30 Oct 2026

OneSignal's documentation has a tutorial for building daily and 7-day streak reminder journeys. It says streak counting is left to your app or backend, through tags and custom events. G2 shows 4.7 from 1,246 reviews (29 Oct 2026).

Where OneSignal beats Plotline: it has a free plan and a $19 starting paid plan, and a high G2 score.

Where it falls short: it is a messaging tool, so the gamification itself is yours to build.

Choose OneSignal if you just need reminders. Choose Trophy instead if you want the streak logic handled for you.

How to choose

  • Your gamification must outlast a campaign: pick Trophy, because it stores streaks, points and rankings per user.
  • You want scratch cards and spin wheels next week: pick Plotline, InAppStory, CleverTap or MoEngage.
  • You want one tool for in-app UI, stories and games and have Enterprise budget: Plotline is the right pick.
  • You already run Braze or CleverTap: check what its gamified templates cover first.
  • You need a finished SOC 2 report this quarter: ask Plotline and CleverTap for theirs, because Trophy's is in progress.
  • You are weighing Plotline against Trophy directly: read Trophy vs Plotline.
