Challenge
Many English learners reach a frustrating plateau. They understand the language, but struggle to use it confidently in real-world situations. Lexioo was built to solve this. Instead of passive learning, the platform focuses on active usage, helping learners practice real-world communication, build confidence in speaking and writing, receive instant feedback on their progress, and develop fluency through consistent, structured practice.
However even with a strong product with over 1M downloads, Lexioo faced a common challenge in learning platforms: users weren't returning as consistently as expected. The issue wasn't the value of the product, but visibility of progress.
Without that sense of progression, motivation dropped over time, learning habits were harder to sustain, and key behaviors weren't repeated consistently. Lexioo needed a way to make progress tangible and rewarding, without compromising the depth of the learning experience.
Solution
The team saw gamification as a way to support habit formation and long-term engagement, not to superficially "gamify" learning.
They didn't want to turn Lexioo into a language game for beginners, but to make every part of the experience more engaging and rewarding. By introducing progression systems, they aimed to reinforce consistent learning behaviors, create a sense of momentum, encourage users to return daily, and make improvement feel visible and measurable.
Lexioo had already built a basic internal system for streaks. But expanding it into a full progression system with points, leaderboards, and achievements would have required significant engineering effort, distracting the team from work on the core learning experience. Instead, they decided to integrate Trophy.
Trophy allowed the team to move faster and focus on the learning experience instead of continuously maintaining gamification infrastructure. Implementation took just a few days, with additional time spent designing thoughtful visuals for achievements and the progression system.
Implementation
With Trophy, Lexioo now powers XP tied to learning activities, achievements for key milestones, streaks to reinforce daily habits and leaderboards to introduce friendly competition.

The team also use push notifications and emails to re-engage users, remind them to keep their streaks alive and to summarize usage over each weekly period to keep learning on track.

Gamification is integrated into the product's home and navigation layer, where users can clearly see their progress, achievements, and key performance metrics. This makes improvement feel visible, continuous, and motivating.

The team built on top of Trophy's existing API-first gamification infrastructure, using the type-safe Node SDK to integrate achievements, streaks, points, and emails into the learning experience. Trophy's clear documentation and straightforward setup made integration smooth.
A key part of Lexioo's approach is that gamification is tied directly to real learning progress. The platform tracks and rewards over a dozen meaningful actions, including completing reading sessions, finishing conversation practice, and engaging in core learning flows. Trophy's flexible user interaction tracking infrastructure was key in making sure that gamification logic was tightly integrated with each of the core actions Lexioo wanted to reward.
Results
Since introducing Trophy, Lexioo has seen clear improvements in user behavior. Improved retention and stronger user engagement have followed as progress becomes more visible and motivating.
Gamification has helped increase consistency in user activity, strengthen engagement across learning sessions, and unlock new features like leaderboards and deeper progression systems that were previous inaccesible due to lack of available engineering time. It has also opened the door for further expansion of gamification across the product experience as Trophy continues to innovate.
